Through a variety of programs in the community and in two public and two private schools, they work together to improve the lives of over 400 street children living in the largest slum outside of Nairobi. Penuel Transforming is comprised of four churches in the Garissa Road slum in the city of Thika, 15 miles northeast of Nairobi.Seline Munyasa is the founder and head of the school. Blessed Children’s Centre serves 225 students in southern Kibera, Nairobi’s largest slum, with an estimated population of 800,000 in an area the size of Central Park. Mawewa School serves 250 students in the Mathare Valley, the second largest slum in Nairobi.The Reverend Anne Owiti is founder and head of the school and clinic. KICOSHEP (Kibera Integrated Community Self-Help Programme) School serves 350 students in the Northern section of Kibera. Gerd shares 2 Corinthians 12:9 as an encouraging verse: “’My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” Gerd has realized how crucial it is to trust in Christ’s power and not her own strength to handle the daily challenges that come her way.ĭave and Gerd’s older children are all living in the States. Gerd is also part of a weekly women’s Bible study. She is the backup flight-follower on weekends and early mornings. Gerd finds great joy and purpose in providing a loving home for her family and supporting Dave in his role as Director of Maintenance and Operations.
